  • Why Didst Thou Trust? - Book By Narain Singh

From The Back Cover Of 'Why Didst Thou Trust?' By Narain Singh

This book was originally written in Punjabi in February 1986 and the last 9th edition was published in April 2013. This speaks volumes of its wide acceptance by the readers all over the world. The Sikhs have acclaimed it as the tragic biography of the modern times. The attack on Darbar Sahib in 1984 was the watershed in the history of the Sikh Psyche. This prompted the author of the book to record this eventful history as seen with own eyes and lived through it.

The present edition is rendered in English and I am privileged to write its introduction at the askance of the publishers. However, it is always difficult to write about the author who has been my esteemed father. Apart from my reverence for him, I must record that he was a divine soul. He did his M.A. English from F.C. College, Lahore in 1927 and later chose to serve as manager Gurdwara Nankana Sahib and its Estate. All his life, he remained dedicated to the cause of sikh and Sikhism.

The present narrative is the history of Sikhs of the modem times. The injustice or betrayal of the promises made with the sikhs speaks louder than words. It is quite traumatic to pass through the blood-stained profiles of this brave nation. It is a long trail of betrayals and deceits.

The author lived by example than precept. This book is testimony of an eye-witness and a faithful record of history. The presence of three nations namely HINDU-MUSLIM-SIKHS in this subcontinent is illustrated as a saga of the 19th/20th century. The partition and creation of Pakistan and the Sikh failure to secure their homeland is also highlighted. The drama enacted by the then rulers - Britishers and the politicians - with the three nations and the pre and post effects of the "Great Divide" is also included in this book. The rulers of India, after partition, further alienated the Sikhs the long chain of events of distrust finally resulted in military attack on Darbar Sahib in 1984. The huge sacrifices by the Sikhs before and after the partition are also side-line by the Hindu politicians. The simmering discontent among the Sikhs is glaringly visible and a painful part of the Sikh psyche. Their eternal prayer "Ardas" enchanted in every household an in every Sikh Gurdwara all over the world seeks His benediction and kind care everywhere under the sun for the brave Sikh nation.

I record my thanks to Singh Brothers, Amritsar for making this noble effort by bringing out the English edition of this eyewitnessed fact based educative book.
