Introduction To 'Rights Of Religious Minorities In India' By Manju Subhash
Rights of Religious Minorities In India makes one of the most thorough investigations of the historical background to the problem of minorities in the Indian subcontinent. Manju Subhash has made a most perceptive analysis of the provisions which the founding fathers incorporated in the Constitution of India for the protection of minorities rights and the inculcation of secularism in the minds of the people.
This study marks a milestone in the search for an intelligent appreciation of the repeated crisis that India faces, whether in Hindu-Muslim relations or in the Sikh problem in the Punjab. The writer has unearthed some startling facts about the origins of the Hindu Sikh tension that is at its height today. She has individually treated the distinctive nature of Muslims, Sikh and Christian minority problems, while simultaneously finding a common root for many of these problems in the selfish motivations of the political leaders of these groups.
The understanding of secularism in the Indian context is absolutely imperative if India is to survive as a single united country. Mere lip-service to the secular ideal is not sufficient, feels the writer.
