Introduction To 'Ravidaas Bani' By Dr. Harjinder Singh Dilgeer

Hermeneutics is not an easy fete. Translation exegesis of Gurbani is a very difficult task. To translate Gurbani into another langugage (other than Punjabi) is still more difficult. Already, there are available several translations of Gurbani, Guru Granth Sahib, Nitnaym etc in Punjabi and other languages; and several of them are results of laborious efforts by their creators; especially in Punjabi, Prof. Sahib Singh's translation of Guru Granth Sahib is a commendable work, so far the best in Punjabi. In English, Dr. Darshan Singh's translation is, so far, the best among the available publications. Similarly, the translations of Nitnaym too have been attempted by many writers. But, unlike the translations of Guru Granth Sahib and Nitnaym/Sukhmani Sahib, no English translation of the verses by Bhagat Baba Ravidas was available to the readers. S. Harjit Singh of DTF, Birmingham (England), S. Rajinder Singh and his erudite son Dr. Davinderpal Singh (of Sikh Book Company, Darbar Sahib) were very keen to fulfill the wish of such ardent followers and students of Sikhism.

I had already translated Nitnaym in 2008 and it was given a grand response; especially the review by Sikh Review Calcutta, gave me great inspiration to publish the translation of Sukhmani Sahib too. I shall always remain indebted to S. Saran Singh and S. Awtar Singh for their love and encouragement. Sukhmani Sahib's translation too received warm welcome; hence I decided to translate some more hymns. Some hymns by Baba Ravidas, Bhagt Kabir and Bhagt Namdev's have always gripped my heart, and, I had been reading it time and again, so I decided to take up the project of Baba Ravidas' s baani.

One thing I want to confess is that hymns of Baba Ravidas are very deep in thought and replete with references and symbols that it was not easy to translate them; hence I had to make a lot of effort to grasp the depth; and, it has enriched my mystic experience.

The transliteration of Gurbani also is no less difficult. 'Times New Roman' or other fonts don't' have letters/signs to represent Gurmukhi words. It is remarkbale to note that Gurmukhi script can spell words of Punjabi, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and several other languages (represented in Guru Granth Sahib) as well as English, Spanish, French and Norwegian etc, but Roman, the script of the 'international' languages like English, Spanish and French, is helpless as it can't write Gurmkhi with its (Roman's) just 26 letter alphabet. The creators of the TAHOMA script, however, has coined and created some letters with the help of dots, commas as well as some other such marks, signs and underlines, which serve 90% of our purpose. This font was first introduced to Gurbani readers by Dr. Kulbir Singh Thind (of the USA) and I am sincerely thankful to him for this discovery. I have varied a bit from his applications. With God's grace, the work is finally done.

I have given line-to-line, word-to-word, meanings in bold face and explanations (with i.e.) in parenthesis and the other words, needed for clarification of sentence in parenthesis, in Italic face. For example, see the following meaning of 'Tohee mohee .... '

(Of God), (between) You and me, and me and you, where is the difference (what is the difference between You and me/human being)? We have been created by You, hence You exist among us, You manifest Yourself in us; i.e. we are not separable from each other}.

In this, 'You and me, and me and you, where is the difference are word-to-word meanings, and, the rest, in Italics and/or parenthesis, is explanation and clarification.
